BCIG Bookclub: “Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking”

THE BOOK: “Blink” is about the decisive glance that knows in an instant. It encourages snap judgments and mind reading with examples from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers. It cites studies about wrongful murders, autism, facial reading, and cardio up-tick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making.

FACILITATORS: Kim Thompson will coordinate an agile team of BCIG volunteers who will review the book in its entirety. Kim is a financial analyst for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority where she works in total compensation, labor economics, and procurement. She has also supported the Metro's rail construction project. Before Metro, Kim served private and public sector agencies by providing financial forecasting, organizational and management reviews, and cost-of-service analyses.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Malcolm Gladwell (born September 3, 1963) is a Canadian journalist based in New York City. He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. “Blink” is Gladwell’s second book. His first was the “Tipping Point.” He was a science writer and the New York bureau chief, for the Washington Post. He currently lives in New York City. Gladwell has a strong following. His work highlights issues in sociology, psychology, and human communications applied to business, society, politics, technology, and consumer behavior. In November 2005, Leonardo DiCaprio bought the rights to "Blink" from Gladwell for one million dollars. Gladwell and DiCaprio plan to make a film about “Blink”.
