DESCRIPTION: The explosion of the amount of scientific publications
is not making scientific research any easier. Although access to scientific
literature is becoming easier, more and more researchers have trouble keeping up
with what is published: the “too much to read” syndrome. Information retrieval
is a research area that aims for tools that facilitate better navigation through
the flood of publications. They enable the user to focus on the most relevant
publications, and search from there. One step further are knowledge management
tools that abstract from just documents and perform analyses at a more detailed
level, i.e., individual concepts. Collexis offers tools in both these areas. In
the talk I will demonstrate a few of these tools and the settings in which they
are used. The techniques used in these tools will be discussed and several
applications for them, ranging from finding experts to hypothesis generation,
explained.

Bob Schijvenaars PhD, Chief Scientific Officer
Collexis, B.V.
Dr. Bob J.A. Schijvenaars studied Astronomy and Computer Science at Leiden
University in The Netherlands. Research projects involved signal analysis, image
processing and pattern recognition. His PhD work at the Erasmus University
focused on automated interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECGs). In 2000 he
co-founded the bioinformatics group at Erasmus
University that studies Knowledge Management in health care in general and in
molecular biology in particular. In 2001 he became involved in Collexis where he
is currently Chief
Scientific Officer.
