SOCIAL: Movies and Dinner

THE MOVIE :“Office Space is a 90 minute hilarious
satirical comedy about cubicle life in a computer related industry. Producer
Mike Judge who gives us “Beavis and Butthead” and "King of the Hill” also gives
us “Office Space,” his first live-action feature. Mike seems to see civilization
crumbling and thinks, "This is pretty funny." Set in a nondescript computer
firm, the movie is a sharp satire of the often stale, numbing existence of the
American Office drone, particularly as found in many computer related
businesses. Milton, a favorite character of your hosts Carl and Jim, was fired
and no one had the heart to tell him. Due to a screw up in payroll, Milton who
seems to have nothing to do except to defend his Swing-Line stapler like a baby
blanket, keeps getting paid somehow, and keeps having his cubical moved more and
more remotely until he ends up in a dark basement spraying rats. Carl and Jim
refer to this treatment of an employee as “Miltonizing.” Hey! It could happen to
any one of us, right? In one of the movie’s plots, three characters hatch a
computer-virus embezzlement scheme that goes awry. The movie clearly shows that
a with a slight touch of exaggeration and with attention paid to the little
things, office reality can be seen as darned funny. You might just roar in
recognition as this collection of office follies plays out.
