The National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health chooses Altum Inc. to maintain and enhance their Grants Reporting System

Reston, VA. April 12, 2004 - The National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health has chosen Altum, Inc. to provide technical support, maintenance services, and enhancements for their internal grants coding and reporting system called the Fiscal Linked Analysis of Research Emphasis (FLARE) system. In particular, Altum will provide technical expertise to maintain and support the system, consolidate reports, conduct performance tuning of the database, enhance the FLARE application to meet new needs, and configure and implement new application and database servers.

In addition to maintenance and support services, Altum will streamline NCI's business process by analyzing workflow and making them more efficient through the implementation of information technology components. These components will be engineered and integrated into the business functions such as program management and technical laboratories using prototypes, pilot systems, and tools/methodologies germane to business analysis and business processing reengineering.

Altum developed FLARE in 1998 when NCI displayed an interest in a scientific coding system and specifically in converting from their old scientific coding system to an Access based system that would evolve into a web application based on Microsoft technologies and further evolve into a Java based application with an Oracle 8i RDBMS. Scott Ostrovecky, director of Altum's grants tracking and reporting division said, "The longstanding relationship we've developed with NCI has led to a partnership where Altum and NCI have worked closely to continually improve and streamline FLARE while providing a reliable application used to track and report scientific research performed on grants issued by NCI".

The National Cancer Institute coordinates the National Cancer Program, which conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.
