Altum, Inc. Assists NIH Clinical Center to Data Mine Biomedical Text for Knowledge Discovery

Reston, VA. August, 2004 - Altum Inc. received a contract from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center (CC) Department of Clinical Research Information (DCRI) to use computer text mining software tools to (1) cluster NIH clinical research protocols according to suitability for data analysis with advanced computational methodologies, and (2) conduct meaningful biomedical text data mining knowledge discovery studies.

"We hope that these advanced data mining techniques will help suggest new hypothesis and possibly lead to the discovery of new biomedical knowledge," stated David Mayer, Altum's team director on the project.

The protocol clusterings will be used to educate and collaboratively engage clinical principle investigators and their associates in studies utilizing data visualization, data mining, and other broad classes of intelligent computational methodologies. After achieving useful practical protocol clustering results, Altum will assist DCRI in designing and arranging appropriate focus group meetings with clustered researchers to brief them on advanced computational methodologies and to encourage collaborations between DCRI and those research investigators whose work would benefit from the use of advanced computational methodologies.
